Our friends at ‘Golf Course Architecture’ just published an excellent article on how Pete Dye’s designs as well as mentorship of young ‘designers-to-be’ have shaped modern golf course design, as well as the approach many designers take to construct a course today. Besides his trademark features like railroad ties, island greens, waste bunkers and foreboding sand traps, it’s the concepts of angular routing, not using detailed plans to promote artistry during construction, and an openness to teach others how to create their own design business that many of his ‘Dye-ciples’ talk about how Pete differentiated himself from other designers and left a massive stamp on future course designs!
With direct contributions from Bill Coore, Tim Liddy, Bobby Weed, Brian Curley, Marco Martin, Chris Lutzke, this article contains tons of anecdotes from some of today’s top architects about Pete (and Alice), what is was like working with them, their design style, and how they took the time to mentor their associates!
We highly recommend taking 15-minutes to read this well-written and insightful article!
