Today, December 29, 2025, marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Paul “Pete” Dye, Jr., one of the most influential golf course architects in the history of the sport. Born on December 29, 1925 in Urbana, Ohio, Pete Dye’s visionary designs redefined what golf courses could be, blending strategic challenge with artistic flair. 

A Legacy That Shaped the Game

Pete Dye’s impact on golf course architecture is immeasurable. Over his career, he designed more than 150 courses around the world, many of which have become iconic stages for the game’s greatest moments — from TPC Sawgrass with its famed Island Green to the rugged challenges of Whistling Straits and Kiawah Ocean Course; from the natural beauty of Teeth of the Dog to the strategic tests at Harbour Town Golf Links and Crooked Stick.

Though Pete passed away on January 9, 2020, at the age of 94, his legacy lives on through the courses that continue to challenge and inspire players of all levels. His bold vision and innovative use of terrain, bunkering, and shot design have influenced generations of architects and golfers alike.
