Ahh, we at the Pete Dye Society fondly remember Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf–a primetime series televising famous professional golfers playing head-to-head! The predecessor to today’s “The Match” and other made for TV golf matchups, Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf gave viewers a more in-depth look at golf’s stars at the time, while highlighting many of the world’s best golf courses. Airing from 1961 to 2003, this was must-watch-TV for golf fans everywhere… and 30 years ago, there was a nice matchup at one of Pete Dye’s lesser known masterpieces!

On April 9, 1994, Shell’s Wonderful World of golf aired a match between Fred Couples (a young professional star at the time who had his breakthrough win at The Masters in 1992) versus Raymond Floyd, a golf legend who won six majors in his illustrious career. Even better, their match was played at Pete Dye’s Teeth of the Dog golf course in La Romana, Dominican Republic–and gave many viewers their first glimpse of the Pete Dye masterpiece on the southern coast of the Dominican Republic!

Couples won the stroke play match by shooting a 68, while Floyd shot a 76. While the match may not have been very competitive, the broadcast highlighted the Pete’s Teeth of the Dog course, along with the Casa de Campo Resort and the town of La Romana in the Dominican Republic.
